Old Fashioned is considered the father of all modern cocktails. Appeared around 1880 in the United States, it embodies the elegance of spirits enhanced by the strict minimum of ingredients. A sugar cube, a few drops of Angostura and a good bourbon: this simple alchemy reveals all the nobility of a characterful whisky.
Preparation
Place the sugar on the bottom of an Old Fashioned glass. Pour the bitters over it.
Add a few drops of water and crush with a muddler.
Add the large ice cube.
Pour in the bourbon.
Squeeze out 15-20 seconds with the bar spoon.
Express the orange peel over the glass by folding it. Rub the edge of the glass.
Put the zest down. Serve straw-free.
Never shake an Old Fashioned — you'll get a hazy cocktail. The golden rule: stir, not shake. The large ice cube melts slowly and maintains balance for 20 minutes.
