Negroni was born in Florence in 1919 when Count Negroni asked to strengthen his Americano by replacing soda with gin. With its three ingredients in equal parts, it is one of the most balanced cocktails in history: gin, Campari and red vermouth merge into something greater than the sum of its parts.
Preparation
Fill a mixing glass with ice.
Pour in the gin, Campari and vermouth.
Squeeze out 30-40 seconds with the bar spoon.
Place a large ice cube in an Old Fashioned glass.
Filter on ice.
Express an orange peel over the glass, rub the edge, put the peel in.
Serve straw-free.
The quality of the vermouth is decisive. A Carpano Antica Formula or Punt e Mes transforms the cocktail. Store vermouth in the fridge and consume within 3 weeks of opening.
